Benavent Dental

Since 1945

Benavent Dental was started in 1945 by Dr. Arturo Benavent after he served in the war as a dentist in the United States Navy. The first location was in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, where his son, Harry Herbert Benavent would eventually come to join the practice. In 2006, Benavent Dental moved to Clarksville, MD. Herby Benavent followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps and joined the practice in 2012.

Dr. Arturo Benavent

Dr. Arturo Benavent grew up in Puerto Rico and would travel by boat from Puerto Rico to New York for his undergraduate studies at College Park, MD in the 1930s. He continued his study of dentistry at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.

After graduating, he became a dentist in the US Navy where he was stationed in South Carolina. After that he started his private practice in Puerto Rico and that was the start of Benavent Dental.

Dr. Arturo Benavent was a member of the Lions Club, where he served one term as President. He also served twice as President of the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Puerto Rico (College of Dental Surgeons of Puerto Rico). He was a proud member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, United States Power Squadron, and the American Dental Association (ADA).

Dr. Arturo Benavent is the founder of Benavent Dental and the start of a legacy of dentists. His passion for dentistry and boating has continued on through his son and grandson.

Dr. H. Herbert Benavent

Dr. H. Herbert Benavent grew up in Puerto Rico where he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico. He then graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 1981.

Dr. H. Herbert Benavent is a member of the Dean’s Faculty at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry as well as a member of the Maryland State Dental Association (MSDA), Howard County Dental Association (HCDA) where he served as President, and the American Dental Association (ADA). He is also a member of the Freemasons. He has served as President of the Maryland Dental Alumni in Puerto Rico, as well as President of the Western District of the College of Dental Surgeons of Puerto Rico.

His passion for boating began at a young age in Puerto Rico and has continued after his move to Maryland. When he isn’t in the office, he enjoys his time tinkering on his boat and exploring the Chesapeake Bay.

Dr. Harry H. Benavent

Dr. Harry H. Benavent grew up in a family that loves helping others and enjoying their time on the water. From the age of 6, he knew he wanted to be a dentist and he has worked his whole life towards that goal. Graduating from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2012, the same school that his father and grandfather graduated from was a highlight of his life.

His love for the water was not forgotten, as boating runs deep in the Benavent veins. Dr. Harry H. Benavent lived aboard his sailboat “Wisdom” for 10 years. In addition to sailing the Chesapeake, he crossed the Atlantic to explore Europe, Africa, and South America using a system that he invented to rig his sailboat with Dyneema.

The voyage did involve a heartfelt return into the waters of Puerto Rico where he used to boat in his youth.

Dr. Harry H. Benavent is a member of the Dean’s Faculty at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He is a member of the Maryland State Dental Association (MSDA), Howard County Dental Association (HCDA), American Dental Association (ADA), a proud Freemason, Scottish Rite Mason, York Rite Mason, Shriner, member of the Alberg 30 Association, and a member of the Ocean Cruising Club (OCC).

Sailing is still a major part of his life and he plans on continuing the legacy of sailing the blue sea with his tiny children as soon as they are old enough. If he’s lucky, they might also want to be dentists as well and carry on the family tradition for another generation.
